Most drivers will have been brought to a grinding halt by a breakdown. They're annoying and can be costly, but the fact is, the vast majority are entirely preventable. Just follow our tips:
If you've been driving for more than a few years, the chances are you've been struck by the curse of the dead battery. When parking up for the night, get into the habit of turning off all your car's controls - such as lights and the radio - before turning off the engine.
Want to avoid a flat tyre? Then check them regularly for bulges, grazes and bald patches. Make sure you know how to change a tyre and always carry the tools for the job.
Lock-outs can send you mad with frustration. Get a spare key cut and give it to a friend.
Low oil and water levels can seriously damage your engine. Make sure they are both topped up correctly and get your antifreeze checked regularly.
Finally, keep your eye on the petrol gauge. There's nothing more annoying - or embarrassing - than having your journey brought to a premature end by a lack of fuel!
