Female drivers may not be getting the exclusive deals they thought they were when using women-only insurance companies, according to a recent study by price comparison site moneysupermarket.com.
Their research has found that a 30-year-old female teacher with a Ford Focus will pay an average £622 for annual cover with the likes of Sheilas' Wheels, More Than Women's Drivers Insurance and Diamond. But with traditional providers such as Swiftcover, Auto Direct and Halifax, the average premium falls to £388 – a saving of almost 40%.
Specialist insurers do offer added extras, such as handbag cover, female-friendly garages and a 24-hour roadside emergency helpline, but Andy Leadbetter, managing director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, advises weighing up whether these additions are worth the extra cost.
"Specialist insurers such as Sheilas' Wheels and Diamond may appear to be a better value alternative for women – catering specifically for their motoring needs. Our research, however, shows it pays to scour the whole market for the best value policy to suit individual circumstances."
