Travel trends for 2009

News story image

Even though Brits may be in the middle of a credit crunch, that hasn't put them off planning a summer holiday in 2009.

Research from travel comparison site travelsupermarket.com has identified some key trends, with holidaymakers opting for package deals and all-inclusive holidays.

With the value of the pound at an all time low against the euro, popular destinations look set to include Turkey, Egypt and Bulgaria – countries outside the euro zone.

Commenting on 2009 travel trends, Frances Tuke from ABTA – The Travel Association – said: "Over the past few years we have seen travellers becoming more adventurous and travelling further afield, and this will continue in 2009 as non-euro zone countries will offer very good value for money – often at very high standards."

Those looking for cheap breaks abroad are advised to book early – as there will be fewer late deals available in 2009 – and be flexible on date and departures to get the best price.

But it's not all about the foreign climes – with lots of holidaymakers opting this year for a 'staycation' – the new travel buzzword for Brits holidaying in the UK.

"People will still want to go on holiday, but they're likely to take shorter breaks closer to home. It will be a case of 'pack up the car and go'," said Richard Carrick, chief executive of self-catering company Hoseasons.

"We believe that the travel trade will increasingly see the benefits of promoting domestic holidays in 2009."
