There was no joking for drivers on 1 April as the Government increased fuel duty by 2.12p per litre, despite petrol prices still averaging over 90p a litre.
Commenting, the President of the AA, Edmund King said: “These April fuel increases are no joke. It's a shame that this and other fuel tax increases will severely dent consumer spending and undermine the UK's economic recovery.
“Taking an extra £1 off drivers each time they fill up their fuel tank is £1 taken away from high street and leisure spending that would help revive the economy.”
New research from uswitch.com has also shown that, in the last decade, the cost of insuring, servicing, taxing and buying fuel for a car has outstripped the rate of inflation by a massive 34%.
