10 weird travel claims

Holiday

From campers being attacked by parachutists to a bride who went up in flames, just some of the bizarre scenarios that have formed the basis of travel insurance claims.

The Daily Telegraph recently compiled a list of some of the most ridiculous claims made by British holidaymakers over the past year. They are:

  • A pensioner whose false teeth fell out while he vomited over the side of a cruise ship, put in a claim for new dentures under ‘lost baggage’.
  • Another unlucky pensioner enjoying a cruise found his toupe overboard after a strong gust of wind lifted it off his head and blew it in to the sea. His travel insurance reimbursed him for the cost of his hairpiece.
  • Two holidaymakers in Devon filed a claim for damage to their cars' paintwork after it was licked by cows.
  • Two children in Cornwall buried their family camcorder in the sand to prevent it being stolen when swimming, but couldn’t remember where it was. Thankfully, the insurer paid out!
  • A young Brit, distracted by a group of women in bikinis, broke his nose when he walked into a bus shelter in Athens. The insurance company paid up for the cost of the hospital bills.
  • A couple in Malaysia returned to their lodge to discover that monkeys had strewn their clothes all across the rainforest. Fortunately the insurer paid up.
  • A family’s camping trip in Wales was disrupted when a parachutist landed on their tent, destroying it. Unfortunately their insurer rejected their claim.
  • A skier who arrived in an Alpine resort only to find very little snow tried to claim for the cost of the skis she bought before leaving Britain. Her claim, as expected, was rejected.
  • A holidaymaker in Sri Lanka needed hospital treatment after a coconut fell on her head while reading in the shade below. The insurer paid for her hospital expenses.
  • A bride’s dream Caribbean wedding was ruined after her dress caught fire on the barbecue. The groom picked her up and threw her into the ocean. Luckily the couple both had wedding cover and were compensated for the ruined outfits.

Make sure you’re prepared for the unexpected this summer and take out a travel insurance policy today.
