The naked truth?

Child seat

Controversial ‘naked’ scanners are currently being trialled at Manchester Airport, which the authorities hope will help to speed up security checks.

The scanners produce ‘naked’ images of passengers as they pass through security, and quickly reveal whether they’re concealing any weapons or explosives. But, the full body scans also show up any breast enlargements, body piercings and a clear black and white outline of genitalia.

The ‘naked’ scans will mean that passengers will no longer have to remove jackets, coats, belts and shoes as they go through security. Passengers will also no longer be subjected to ‘pat down’ searches.

Manchester airport have stressed that the images are not pornographic and will be destroyed straightaway.

The scanners, which are currently being rolled out across the USA, cost £80,000 each and work by beaming electromagnetic waves on to passengers as they stand in a booth. A virtual 3D image is then created from the reflected energy.

Passengers can refuse to be scanned but, if the Manchester Airport trial is successful, the Department of Transport will decide whether to install them permanently across the UK.
