Mitsubishi Colt - 'an easy to drive hatchback'

The Mitsubishi Colt hatchback proves that there is more to the Japanese manufacturer than rally inspired high powered saloons, according to a reviewer.

Parkers states that the Colt is "good looking, well equipped and easy to drive", with the high driving position and design of the dashboard particularly impressive.

The size of the boot and folding rear seats make the car a more practical proposition than many of its competitors, while there is plenty of room in the back for three children or two adults.

Engine performance is an area where the Colt picks up fewer plaudits, with Parker's noting that the entry level 1.1 litre is "weak" away from town centres and What Car? describing the 1.3 version as lacking "grunt and refinement".

Despite that, there are still problems with engine, suspension and road noise in some circumstances.

However, with solid build quality, excellent reliability and good fuel economy results, the Colt represents a value-for-money proposition for those in the market for a small family car.

The entry level model comes with electric front windows, remote locking and a CD player as standard, while air conditioning is added to the more expensive Colts.

Prices start at £7,400, with the 1.1 litre models in motor insurance group three or four.

Kwik-Fit Insurance customers can choose to add breakdown cover to their car insurance policies for a small charge.
