Brits 'must update home insurance after renovations'Home insurance policies could be affected by Britons' conversions to their homes, it has been suggested.
A study by home insurance provider AA showed a fifth of homeowners have converted attics, cellars, gardens and sheds, with many doing so in a bid to boost their home's value.
More than half of these homeowners changed their attics, spending an average £10,391 on the conversion.
However, they should bear in mind the home insurance implications of such renovations, according to the firm.
Janet Pell, the head of home insurance at AA Insurance, said an extension or conversion could change a three-bedroom cottage into a house featuring four bedrooms.
"Make sure you update your home insurance cover following an extension or conversion," she urged.
Additional furniture and possessions should also be covered by a person's home insurance policy.
Last month, an Alliance & Leicester report suggested homeowners could add an extra £100,000 to the value of a home by adding a loft conversion.
Home insurance customers are covered for accidental damage to their TV, home computer and hi-fi with a policy from Kwik-Fit Insurance.
