Car boot treasures 'need covering with home insurance'

Britons picking up bargains from car boot sales should make sure that they let their home insurance provider know if they pick up an expensive item, consumers have been advised.

According to home insurance provider Halifax, 5.6 million UK residents make £890 from speculating on bargains at car boot sales.

Some 12 per cent of Brits have managed to snap up a treasure at the second-hand sales, while two-thirds of consumers stated that they have visited such an event in the last five years.

Vicky Emmott, Senior Manager of Underwriting at the firm, said: "Britons like nothing more than snapping up a bargain, and with all those TV programmes devoted to turning trash into treasure more Britons seem to know what they are looking for."

But she added that people must inform their home insurance company of changes to the contents of their property, especially if they take home a bit of treasure found at a car boot stall.

Recently, Nationwide Building Society urged consumers to ensure that their children's possessions were covered by home insurance if they were heading back to university.

Householders could save up to 15 per cent on their home insurance when they take combined buildings and contents cover with Kwik-Fit Insurance.
