'Choose professionals' to avoid home insurance claim

Householders, such as home insurance customers, are being urged to have any improvements to their property carried out by professionals to avoid the chance of devaluing their residence.

Research by Halifax recently found that one in four householders undertook improvements to their property over the past year to add value to their house, while 51 per cent believe that their hard DIY work will add £5,000 to the value of their home.

The majority of respondents said that they were redecorating to add value, while 41 per cent stated that they are working on their garden to make it more appealing to buyers.

According to the findings, most homeowners believe that redecorating will help them add £2,500 to their house's value, while gardening work is expected to raise the same amount, stated 37 per cent of interviewees.

However, in light of the findings, Patrick Sawdon of Halifax Valuers warned that badly executed work could devalue a property – in addition to potentially resulting in a home insurance claim.

"If you're considering embarking on major work, do consult the professionals and seek any necessary planning permission before getting started," he cautioned.

According to interior designer George Bond, the majority of property buyers prefer neutral tones.
