'Cover bicycles with home insurance'

Students are being urged to ensure that their bicycles are covered by home insurance after results showed that more that 100 bikes are stolen in the UK each day.

Research by Direct Line has shown that 106 bicycles are illegally taken from students every day at a cost of £18.7 million.

In addition, only a third of scholars have been found to have their bicycles covered under home insurance.

"With so many students at risk of having their bike stolen, we would strongly advise them to either take out their own insurance or check to see if their parents' policy covers them," said Andrew Lowe, spokesman for the firm.

He added that scholars should also invest a few pounds in a lock for their bicycle, rather than run the risk of having their property stolen by thieves.

It was recently discovered that 40 per cent of cyclists are leaving themselves open to theft by not ensuring their bikes are insured, cover provider Cycleguard discovered.
