Home insurance 'could cover students' possessions'

Now that most UK students are back at university after the summer break, parents are being urged to make sure that their offsprings' possessions are covered by home insurance.

According to Nationwide Building Society, many parents believe home insurance for scholars' possessions is too expensive and take a risk rather than spending the extra cash.

However, Robin Bailey, Nationwide's insurance director, stated that many parents may not realise that their current home insurance policy may already cover their children's belongings while they are away studying.

"Parents may be unaware that their child's contents could be covered under their own home insurance policy and therefore may not need to take out additional cover while they are living at university," he stated.

Meanwhile, separate research from F&C Investments has shown that a third of parents are saving money to help pay for their children to attend university.
