Home insurance for downloads 'a red herring'

A new home insurance product from Nationwide that covers music downloads has been criticised as being a publicity stunt.

The product claims to cover music downloads and other intangible assets from damage and theft.

However, Adrian Webb of esure says home insurance cover that includes mp3 downloads is a "thrills round the edges" product.

He states that as mp3 players need to be connected to a PC for the music to be transferred, then the files should still be available on the PC if the player is damaged or stolen.

"I am not sure how the cover they are talking about would exist, unless you lose both your computer and your mp3 player in a fire or theft," he comments.

"The focus on the mp3 player seems spurious to me. I can't see any circumstances where this would apply."

Nationwide recently conducted a study that revealed a quarter of households do not hold a home insurance policy that covers building contents.
