Online homeowners 'should be wary of spam'

A new report from uSwitch.com has recommended that homeowners with internet connections should be wary of opening spam e-mails.

Some 85 per cent of homeowners surveyed claim to receive spam e-mails, although worryingly, one in ten expose their computers to risks unlikely to be covered by their home insurance by opening the e-mails before deleting them.

A percentage of spam e-mails are likely to contain viruses that can cause data loss and corruption – things that are often not covered in standard home insurance policies.

Chris Williams, broadband product manager at uSwitch.com, stated: "Millions of UK homes experience computer problems after receiving spam making online security imperative, so it is worrying that just 620,000 claim that they are using spam filters."

"It is more important than ever for consumers to take the necessary measures to protect their computers against the possible dangers of spam," he concluded.

Many companies produce antivirus software, e-mail filters, adware and spyware blockers and firewalls – all products designed to help prevent attacks on home computers that could potentially have no recourse, even with home insurance.
