Renovating Brits risking home insurance claim?

Many Britons, including home insurance holders, are now choosing to remain in their current house and carry out renovations rather than move to a new house, a study has shown.

According to findings by Standard Life, three-quarters of householders are put off moving because of increased cost and stress, with a third now choosing to carry out renovations to their property rather than finding a new residence.

The study showed that one in ten Britons who carried out renovations to their properties had added rooms such as bed and bathrooms, building an extra 150 square feet onto their homes.

Ashley Ramsay, trends expert at Standard Life Bank, said: "Savvy homeowners appreciate that their property is a valuable asset and investing time, effort and money could be worthwhile."

But householders may want to invest in home insurance before making changes to their property in the event of accidental damage occurring.

Comparison site Confused.com recently claimed that summer is the prime time for Britons to accidentally invalidate their home insurance claims.
