Wedding rings 'disappear within a year'

More than one in ten men lose their wedding rings within just three months of getting it, according to new research from Prudential home insurance.

Despite this, the survey found that 61 per cent of those who lose their wedding ring within three months do not have it specified as covered on their home insurance.

Furthermore, 42 per cent will lose their wedding ring within the first five years of receiving it.

Phil Southgate, media relations manager at Prudential home insurance, commented: "Losing something as precious as a wedding or engagement ring is upsetting enough but over 18,000 people this year will suffer a double blow when they realise they have no insurance to cover their loss."

"We would advise listing the ring as a 'named' item on your home insurance policy. While insurance can't replace the sentimental value of a ring, it will cover any financial loss," he concluded.

The survey estimated that the monetary loss of wedding and engagement rings amounts to £94 million.

Some home insurance policies allow a temporary increase in the sum assured available for lost gifts for the month before and after weddings, as well as the Christmas period.
