Big pink taxis for Dubai

Dubai is to introduce taxis that can only by used by women.

The scheme will feature cars with pink roofs, seats and interiors to give the cars "a feminine touch" says director of the Dubai Taxi Department at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Ammar Bin Tamim, according to the Gulf News.

Mr Bin Tammin said that the drivers would all be female, and would pick up women passengers and children outside shopping malls and maternity hospitals.

He added that female passengers travelling alone felt safer in taxis driven by women and that the airport service already has such taxis in place.

In the UK a similar scheme was launched for a ladies-only travel service. Pink Ladies Cars was established in 2005 with female drivers providing travel hire for pre-booked women customers. Pink Ladies' drivers are self-defence trained and drive bright pink Renault Kangoos to pick up customers.

Pink Ladies states it was created to "promote safety". With personal safety in mind, statistics show that women are less likely to be involved in accidents than male drivers. That is why some car insurance providers are able to provide cheaper car insurance for women.
