British women 'taking a keen interest in cars'British women are becoming increasingly taken with motoring, according to a new survey from Mint. It found that one in five sacrifice their social lives to buy a new car, which by law would require car insurance.
Some 17 per cent said of those surveyed said they would forfeit their annual holiday to get the car they want, while one in ten said they would make concessions in their wardrobes in order to obtain their dream car, for which a new car insurance policy may well be needed.
Jerry Toher, Mint's managing director, said: "Our research clearly shows that today’s woman is taking a keen interest in cars and taking every opportunity to get behind the wheel."
He added: "What’s really interesting is that these driving divas are prepared to make major sacrifices in order to finance their cars, whether it’s cutting back on nights out or downscaling their wardrobe."
Some car insurance providers offer more favourable premiums for women drivers. According to the Economic & Social Research Council, the driver of a motor vehicle involved in an accident more than twice as likely to be a man than a women.
In 2005 the UK government opted out of a European commission attempt to brand cheaper car insurance premiums as sex discrimination because insurers argued that the distinctions were based on statistics, not discrimination, according to the Guardian.
