Women's car insurance a must for school-run mumsCar insurance for women is a necessity for the mums who drive their children to school three days a week but it may not cover child seats against theft, accident or fire, surveys have shown.
Research for online car insurance company swiftcover.com has found that 4.5 million motorists drive their children to school because they feel more comfortable travelling in their own cars and feel it is a safer method of transport than using public buses or trains.
The study showed that, on average, mums drive their children to school three days a week and dads make the journey twice. Less than a tenth of parents questioned said they believed it would be possible to use public transport rather than drive.
Andrew Blowers, chief executive officer of swiftcover.com, said: "Our research shows that people travel an average of four miles to get to school each day and for most parents the only way to make this journey is by car. If the government wants to reduce congestion in urban areas and encourage parents to stop making the school run by car, there needs to increased availability and promotion of the public transport alternatives."
The news comes days before changes are made to the law which stipulate that children under 12 must use car seats when travelling in vehicles. However, research analyst Defaqto has found that only 11 car insurance providers offer child seat cover out of a total 131 insurers, reports the Daily Mail.
