Car insurance customers 'better protected' in a PassatCar insurance customers driving a Volkswagen Passat may be the best protected motorists on the road, according to the results of a new survey.
Researchers at the Monash University Accident Research Centre have compiled a list of the safest used cars available, after analysing data from 2.8 million vehicles involved in crashes in Australia and New Zealand between 1987 and 2005.
The vehicles were rated for how well they protected occupants and other road users in a collision situation and the 1998 to 2005 Passat model came out on top.
At the other end of the scale was the 1982 to 1990 Daihatsu Hi-Jet, with researchers concluding its driver and passengers are 26 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in an accident than those in a Volkswagen Passat.
University staff also noted a number of trends in the data, including newer vehicles being safer, European cars "leading the way in safety design" and lighter vehicles being the worst performers in crashes.
Vehicles on sale in the UK are generally tested for safety by Euro NCAP and car insurance customers may be interested to know that the Nissan Qashqai recently attained the highest ever rating for adult occupant protection.
Research conducted last year found that motor insurance customers could save up to £231.92 with Kwik-Fit Insurance.
