Car insurance dodgers face crackdown

Motorists in North Yorkshire may want to ensure that they have the correct car insurance cover for their vehicles because police have a new weapon in the fight against insurance evaders.

Together with the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB), officers have set up a phoneline through which they can check for sure whether a vehicle they have stopped at the roadside is covered by car insurance, the York Press reports.

The move has been made following results which showed that last year, more than 78,000 vehicles were seized by police across the country for not having any car insurance cover.

Ashton West, chief executive of the MIB, said: "When traffic police pull over a vehicle that does not appear on the Motor Insurance Database, there can be occasions where the driver claims to be insured."

He added that motorists continuing to drive without car insurance cover were both "selfish" and "reckless".

Recently, telecommunications firm Tiscali warned drivers that receiving penalty points could cause car insurance premiums to rise.

Car insurance customers could save up to £225.67 with Kwik-Fit Insurance, according to independent research in June 2007.
