Car insurance may be important for road trippers

Research has highlighted that millions of Britons plan to go travelling with their vehicle over the coming year, potentially risking a car insurance claim if they have not made themselves aware of rules on foreign roads.

According to findings from Halifax, some 17.5 million consumers plan to take a road trip over the next 12 months, with the average traveller clocking up 861 miles in the process.

The firm is calling upon Britons to ensure they know the rules of the road in foreign countries – which could help them avoid a car insurance claim.

Spokesman for the company Paul Birkhead warned: "The Foreign and Commonwealth Office highlights foreign roads as amongst the top five locations for injuries to occur to British holidaymakers."

He called upon Brits planning to rent a car to always rely on a reputable firm and those planning to travel via moped to wear a helmet.

Recently, the British Insurance Brokers' Association called upon drivers to ensure that they are covered by car insurance for loss or damage to their vehicle when abroad.

Kwik-Fit Insurance provides car insurance customers with 60 days free European travel cover.
