'Don't risk car insurance claims on the school run'

Many British drivers may be risking more than their car insurance premiums during the school run, research has suggested.

A study from Sainsbury's Bank has highlighted that one-fourth of parents have not always made sure that their children are securely fastened into a child car seat on journeys.

In addition, more than 460,000 people have potentially had to claim on their car insurance after being involved in accidents during the school run while a child was in the car.

Steve Johnson, Head of Car Insurance at Sainsbury's Bank, said: "The familiarity of the route coupled by the often short distances travelled may make parents feel overly confident and therefore less aware of the dangers involved in the school run."

The highest proportion of drivers having an accident during the school run with children inside the vehicle was seen in the south of England, while Scotland was shown to have the smallest number followed by London.

Labour assembly member John Biggs recently stated that one-fifth of cars on the road at 08:50 GMT were on the school run.

Kwik-Fit Insurance customers can choose to add breakdown cover to their car insurance policies for a small charge.
