Drunk drivers could have risked a car insurance claimA number of drivers in West Berkshire could have had to claim on their car insurance as a result of being drunk behind the wheel, with figures showing that a seventh of motorists stopped by police were over the limit or failed to take a breath test.
A campaign running between July 30th and September 2nd saw police in the area stop more than a thousand motorists, 15 per cent of who were subsequently arrested for having drunk too much or refusing to be breathalysed, reports the Newbury News.
In addition, 45 drivers across the Thames Valley area could also have narrowly missed a car insurance claim after being found to be under the influence of drug while behind the wheel.
"It is extremely disappointing that some drivers are still choosing to ignore our warnings and think it is acceptable to put their lives and the lives of other road users at risk," said Superintendent Mick Doyle, head of Roads Policing.
Meanwhile, younger males may be more likely to have to make a car insurance claim in the event of a drink driving incident, as government figures show them to be the age group where the practice is most common.
Car insurance customers could save up to 36 per cent on their car insurance premium with Kwik-Fit Insurance according to independent research in June 2007.
