Help cut car costs on National Lift Share Day

New research from Halifax Car Insurance reveals that approximately 38 million spare seats will be available in cars across the UK on National Lift Share Day, this Wednesday.

The study revealed that the average cost of a driver travelling to work alone is £1,017, while only one in five drivers share their cars with colleagues.

Halifax Car Insurance said that this cost could be halved by sharing journeys with friends or colleagues. Drivers might not need to worry about extra car insurance to do this, according to Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at Halifax Car Insurance.

He said: "Insurance wise, you can carry passengers in return for a mileage payment as long as there is no element of profit."

"Passengers in the car not only improve your environmental credentials, they can also act as an extra pair of eyes for you, especially in the morning rush hour when traffic is at its heaviest," he added.

According to Liftshare, a car sharing website, sharing lifts can improve transport problems for employers and reduce the pressure on city parking spots, while solving the problems of sparse rural public transport.

Many motor insurance policies allow car sharing, provided that the vehicle has not been adapted to carry more than eight passengers and that it is not part of a business of carrying passengers.
