Lancs Police catch car insurance dodgers

A number of vehicles believed to be without car insurance cover have been removed from roads in Lancashire.

Police officers set up checkpoints at sites around the county and used automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to catch drivers believed to have no car insurance cover, tax or an MoT, the Lancashire Telegraph reports.

The operation, which was aided by HM Revenue & Customs and the Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency, succeeded in removing ten cars from the roads after thousands of vehicles were scanned with the equipment.

Police Constable Marc Rigby from Rossendale Police said: "The ANPR system allows us to identify vehicles that we suspect are being used by criminals and we can keep track of them on the borough's roads."

Recently, a similar operation in Sussex saw 50 vehicles confiscated by police, with owners only able to reclaim their automobiles if they can produce proof of car insurance and tax.

Kwik-Fit Insurance is the cheapest car insurance provider in the UK according to independent research from January to May 2007.
