Offenders told: Produce car insurance proof

Drivers whose vehicles have been seized as part of a crackdown on illegal automobiles in an area of East Sussex will have to prove they have adequate car insurance before they get their vehicles back, it has been claimed.

Vehicles found to be untaxed, abandoned or causing a nuisance have been confiscated by Lewes District Council, which seized 50 cars in total over a three-day period, the Argus reports.

According to the publication, owners will not be able to take their vehicles back unless they can produce evidence that the automobiles have adequate car insurance and tax cover.

David Gray, Lewes District Council's lead councillor for community, said "This operation has been a tremendous success in removing unsightly vehicles that are a real nuisance to local communities as well as a potential danger."

The publication adds that the vehicles are often without car insurance cover and can easily become targets for crimes such as arson.

Meanwhile, in Yorkshire, police have set up a helpline for consumers to use when reporting car insurance dodgers.

Car insurance customers could save up to £225.67 on their car insurance premium with Kwik-Fit Insurance according to independent research in June 2007.
