Handbag cover 'could provide peace of mind for women drivers'

The fifth of Britain's women who have reported having their handbags lost or stolen may be interested in taking out women's car insurance, under which handbags are often covered.

A study conducted by insurer Cornhill Direct showed that the average value of a handbag and its contents is now £300.

In addition, handbags were found to cost on average £48 each, with the price of a purse coming in at £21 and make-up adding another £50.

The research also highlighted that women carry around £38 in cash in their handbags along with a mobile phone valued at £96 and an MP3 player worth an average of £35.

Cornhill Direct spokesman, Mark Bishop, said: "We would urge anyone carrying a handbag to be aware that they are a prime target for thieves.

"Try not to carry around important documents and take sensible precautions to minimise the risk of theft."

Bromsgrove Recent thefts occurred in Bromsgrove when a handbag was stolen from a car boot and in Yeovil where a bag was snatched from a car park in the town centre.

Kwik-Fit Insurance provides female drivers with £150 personal belongings cover as part of their women's car insurance, which covers handbags and their contents.
