Women motorists 'still needed to drive HGVs'

Female drivers – who may be entitled to good deals on women's car insurance – are still much needed to drive large good vehicles (HGVs), a report has shown.

According to figures from Skills for Logistics, women drivers represent only two per cent of UK's HGV driving population, RoadTransport.com states.

Anne Preston, Chairman and President of logistics business Prestons of Potto, told the website that she had not seen the increase in female drivers that she had expected, despite the conditions for women being good.

"We have had female drivers who have been very good. They tend to receive very good treatment [but] I haven't seen the increase in women drivers that I had expected," she said.

Ms Preston added that the shortage of HGV drivers was more noticeable in the south of England and in areas such as Cambridgeshire.

Last month's American National Truck Driving Championships featured a record number of female drivers – many of whom may be women's car insurance customers.

Women could save up to £210.61 on their car insurance premium with Kwik-Fit Insurance according to independent research in June 2007.
