Women's car insurance customers given stereo warningWomen's car insurance customers were today warned that there has been a spate of thefts from vehicles in the Vale Royal district of Cheshire.
Rumours suggest the thefts have been prompted by an urban myth that the radio card in a Ford Focus's stereo can be placed in a Sky television digibox and used to obtain free channels, reports the Runcorn & Widnes Weekly News.
Police officers do not believe that to be the case and instead suspect the thieves are merely motivated by the current marketability of second-hand car stereos.
Inspector Peter Minghella said his officers would be mounting higher visibility patrols in a bid to deter the criminals, but added that car owners could take some simple steps to reduce their chance of falling victim to vehicle crime and having to claim on their car insurance.
"If people use their garages or park with the passenger window against a wall it makes it harder for the thieves to break in. They won't reach across the steering column to get to the stereo as it makes their job harder," he explained.
Which? magazine's David Evans recently told the Daily Mail that thefts from vehicles are increasing because of the popularity of satellite navigation systems and warned that leaving such a device in an unoccupied vehicle is "asking for trouble".
More than 80 per cent of female motorists could save on their women's car insurance with Kwik-Fit Insurance, a study from last year has shown.
