Women's motor insurance makes female truckers desirableFemale truck drivers in America are becoming more appealing to haulage firms thanks to their statistically-proven safe driving and low women's motor insurance premiums.
According to the US bureau of labor statistics, the number of women truck drivers peaked in September 2001 at 183,000, before declining in the economic slump following the 9/11 terrorist attacks and now recruiters are hoping to reverse the trend.
Tony Marra, who runs a transportation institute in suburban Washington, said that women are finding it easy to get jobs in the trucking industry after they complete driver training because they are viewed as safer drivers.
He added: "It's a well paying and stable career for someone without a college degree with annual starting salaries around $33,500."
With only two per cent of Britain's 400,000 truckers being female and a shortage of qualified lorry drivers, the haulage business is trying to recruit more female drivers through methods such as grant provision as female apprenticeship.
According to information published by the Social Issues Research Centre in Oxford, women are less aggressive and take fewer risks when driving than men.
