Our Environment

We are constantly aware of our environmental practices and the impact these have on both our people and our surroundings.

In 2008 we created a new position in the company, Environmental Manager, as we sought to create a clear strategy underpinning our environmental policies. We began a series of initiatives across the whole company with the aim of reducing our waste output, energy and resource use.

Some of our initiatives included:

  • A recycling initiative was established for cardboard, drinks cans, paper and plastic bottles. Since rolling this out we have reduced our residual waste uplifts by 40%
  • Every member of staff in the company was issued with a plastic sports water bottle to allow them to regularly top up with water throughout the day and for us to reduce disposable plastic cup waste to zero.
  • Across the business our printer settings have been amended where possible to default to double sided and to ensure that headed paper is not used unnecessarily. There has also been updated training to all staff on the efficient use of our printers.
  • Electrical consumption is monitored on a daily basis using half hourly data supplied by our energy supplier. This has enabled more efficient management procedures to be implemented, resulting in significant power savings. Air conditioning and lighting is switched off when the building is unoccupied.
  • Water usage is also monitored to help reduce consumption.
  • Fair trade coffee is sold in our onsite Bistro. Coffee grounds are bagged after use and given to staff for recycling in their garden.

Our staff are very pro-active in helping us work towards our environmental goals. A Green Committee has been formed, with employees from all areas of the business sitting on the team. They meet quarterly to discuss new green initiatives, staff surveys and updated results on our waste management.
